If you’re anything like me, you can’t stand hearing a baby cry.
As soon as I hear it, I want to do whatever I can to help and soothe them. If it’s a child I know, my first instinct is to pick them up and see if I can work out what’s wrong, to see if I can help.
I know from speaking to friends who are mothers, that when you’re a mother yourself, this instinct is even stronger.
So in 2008 when 29 year old Police woman Jiang Xiaojuan was working in the quake zone of the Sichuan province when she heard the cries of the babies who survived it was instinctive to try and help.
Being the mother of a 6 month old baby herself, she soon realised that for the children whose mothers had either lost their lives, were missing or were so weakened and traumatised by their experience that their milk had stopped, there was something very special that she could do.
So she began breastfeeding any child who needed a mother’s milk, but could not get it from their own. At one point Jiang Xiaojuan was feeding 9 babies, doing what she could to help prevent further loss of life.
Jiang Xiaojuan was nicknamed China’s number 1 mother, and was embarrassed by all of the attention. To her she was just listening to her instincts as a mother and her duty as a policewoman to help others.
See her incredible story here:
So today I would like you to join me in celebrating Jiang Xiaojuan, a mother who listened to her instincts as a woman and in the process saved many young lives through her desire to nurture and protect the young children of the Sichuan Province in any way she could.
