I love that inspiration for this blog can be found in the most unlikely of places. The other night while I was eating dinner my Mum was watching a television program called “The Secret Millionaire”. If you haven’t seen it, the concept involves taking someone who has made it ‘big’ and achieved great financial success and putting them undercover in an area of the country which has financial challenges in order for them to find people who they would like to use their wealth to help. I didn’t intend to actually watch the program, as I had a lot to do…but I got drawn in…
This week’s episode followed a man called Arfan Razak, a successful restauranteur as he went undercover in the Cowley region of Oxfordshire. Raz was a self-confessed ‘control freak’ with no time for his family who lived for his work.
On his journey he encountered an incredible woman known locally as Ma Smith, who runs a soup kitchen in the area. A grandmother, who hasn’t missed a day of the soup kitchen in the last 20 years, she also puts her heart and soul into fundraising to try and keep the service open. One of her diners says of her, “THERE is no one else like her. She is an angel on Earth.”
Here is a short video telling the story of Ma Smith and her soup kitchen:
When Raz handed her a cheque for £11,500, enough to keep her soup kitchen running for the next two years her response was one of pure gratitude. Not for herself, for knowing that ‘people still cares about other people, and that’s what’s really wonderful’.
Her parting words on the program show her pure heart of gold…and you could see the affect that she had on Raz and his future with his family: ‘Taking care of others, that’s the richest thing he could ever have. All the money that he has…he’s not rich. [To] love people, that is the best riches he will ever have’.
What was beautiful was to hear how the experience changed Raz himself, “I came here thinking there was something missing in my life, I didn’t need to look much further than my nose. It was in front of me. It was my family. What I thought I was looking for, I’ve already got.”
Ma is a truly inspiring woman…she lives to love and give to others and I would like for you to join me today in acknowledging and celebrating her.
The world would be a better place if it had more people like Ma Smith in it…
