Martine WrightOn July 6th 2005, Martine Wright spent the evening with friends celebrating London winning the 2012 Olympic bid, having spent the day watching huge screens waiting for the announcement to be made.

On July 7th 2005, fate brought her to the circle line tube…and the carriage that was the target of a terrorist bomb attack.  Martine suffered devastating injuries in the blast, and lost both of her legs.  When she speaks of her experience her overwhelming emotion is one of gratitude at how lucky she was that an off duty police officer found her and helped to save her life.

But Martine was not prepared for this to be the end of her story…in fact she was determined that some good, some hope, some inspiration would come of her situation.

She learned to fly, married her boyfriend and had her son Oscar….but it was watching the Beijing Paralympics that would change her life forever.

Martine saw the competitors giving their all, inspiring millions despite their physical challenges…and she decided that she wanted to be one of them….and that her calling was to compete in London.

She began playing sitting volleyball and immediately loved it…the sport, the camaraderie with her teammates and the characters she met on the court.

Martine wasn’t sure that she would be selected for the British squad but her determination, hard work and unrelenting spirit were to be rewarded…and she will be competing along with the rest of her team in the Paralympic games here in London.  Her dream has become a reality.

My words can’t do the journey this incredible woman has been on justice…so I encourage you to watch this short, moving and inspiring video in which she shares her story…
